Koalib imperatives and semantically related forms

Koalib is a Kordofanian language traditionally spoken in South Kordofan (Sudan). This paper, based on first-hand data, is the first in-depth study of the morphology of imperatives in this language. Section 1 introduces the language and the structure of the paper. Section 2 provides the reader with basic facts about Koalib grammar in order to enable them to better follow what comes next. Then, Section 3 deals in detail with the main characteristics of standard imperative morphology, including both positive and negative polarity. Section 4 investigates specific types of imperatives: imperatives in (i) reported speech, (ii) attenuated and (iii) intensive imperative paradigms, as well as (iv) imperatives of irregular verbs. Section 5 takes stock of forms semantically related to imperatives, namely jussive constructions and commands addressed to animals. The conclusion emphasizes the particular typological interest of Koalib imperatives.
