In his article, “The Self as the Ontological Root of the Person: Reflections on John F. Crosby,” Who 6 (2017), Burgos, in the midst of fundamental agreement with my work on personalism, raises some challenging objections to me. These concern primarily my use of the term “incommunicability” and my affirmation of “persons as substances.” I respond to these objections, but only after exploring an area of ​​disagreement that Burgos did not mention: he thinks that he and I are both aware of the “loneliness” of the human person, but I ask him whether, on this issue, he is inadvertently leaning toward an individualism that I want to avoid.
