HOW EXTRA TUITION AFFECT STUDENTS LEARNING?
View through CrossRef
Currently, modernizing educational reforms are being performed in Vietnam for integration into the global education system, with an emphasis on the physical and mental health of learners. However, outstanding issues in education that affect learners have become a topic of heated debate. In particular, the topic of extra tuition is of great concern to the public. This study utilized a survey with 1,483 teachers teaching Mathematics and Literature at the secondary level; 2,355 9th-grade students and 366 parents of children enrolled in extra tuition in three provinces representing the three regions of North-Central-South Vietnam to capture the current status of extra tuition among secondary school seniors in Vietnam, as well as to explore its impact on current education-related issues. The results showed that 100% of secondary school seniors were enrolled in extra tuition at school and 64.9% of students were enrolled in extra tuition outside of school; 94.8% of teachers participated in extra tuition outside of school, and 100% of teachers in Mathematics and Literature participated in extra tuition at school; 100% of parents enrolled their children in extra tuition, although only 59.8% of them thought that it was necessary to send their children to extra tuition. The results of this research provide an important basis for managers and policymakers to make the right decisions regarding the current issue of extra tuition, and it also opens up new research directions such as evaluating the present quality of teaching in Vietnamese secondary schools, solutions for monitoring extra tuition within and outside of school, or research on the mentality of students and parents when enrolling their children in extra tuition, the physical and mental health of senior students, and other potential stakeholders. This research provides valuable survey and analysis information for the field of modern education.
