Panel Fragment for the House of Printing in Leningrad

View through Europeana Collections
Between 1926 and 1928, Shulimo-Samuillo attended the Collective of Masters of Analytical Art headed by Pavel Filonov. As a member of the group, from 1926 or 1927, he participated in an exhibition at the Press House in Leningrad, which was held in conjunction with the performance of Nikolai Gogol's "Inspector General". The collective "Masters of Analytical Art" designed the sets and costumes for the performance, but at the same time decorated the walls of the amphitheatre with huge panels and two sculptures. The work - one of four sections of a panel by Sulimo-Samuillo - is a colour figurative composition projected on a blue, green and red background. It is dominated by the image of a brown boot with a spur (left) and part of a high right leg in trousers, bent and resting on the knee (right). The second level is dominated by variegated and miniaturised motifs depicting flowers (mainly roses on the left and 'bellflowers' on the lower right) and decorative motifs. Behind and to the left of the heel of the right foot is a house with a gabled roof and a small chimney, seen from above on the front and slightly to the side, which is structured on the basis of variegated decorative motifs in miniature.
