THE INFLUENCE OF SEASONAL CHANGES ON AGNI: AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO DIGESTIVE HEALTH

View through CrossRef
Digestive health is fundamental to overall wellness in Ayurveda, where Agni, or digestive fire, plays a crucial role in the breakdown, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients. Ancient Ayurvedic texts highlight the dynamic character of Agni, which varies with seasonal shifts (Ritucharya), affecting digestion, metabolism, and suscepti-bility to diseases. This review examines the significant impact of seasonal changes on Agni, detailing how each season influences digestive functionality and the ways in which imbalances can lead to digestive disorders. By analyzing classical Ayurvedic literature alongside contemporary scientific studies, this paper investigates how environmental factors, including temperature, humidity, and variations in Dosha, affect digestion. The findings indicate that specific seasons, such as winter (Hemanta and Shishira), which enhance Agni, and summer (Grishma), which diminish it, require adjustments in diet and lifestyle. Additionally, the review provides Ayur-vedic recommendations to optimize Agni, including seasonal dietary practices, herbal remedies, detoxification therapies (Panchakarma), and lifestyle modifications aligned with Dinacharya (daily routine). A comparative analysis with modern nutritional science reveals similarities between Ayurvedic dietary guidelines and current understandings of metabolism, shifts in gut microbiota, and the influences of circadian rhythms on digestive pro-cesses. While Ayurveda presents a structured methodology for sustaining digestive health, challenges persist in merging these ancient concepts with contemporary medical practices, primarily due to the absence of extensive clinical validation. Future research should prioritize bridging this divide by undertaking empirical studies to in-vestigate seasonal digestive changes and the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments. This review emphasizes the importance of adjusting dietary and lifestyle practices in accordance with seasonal variations to preserve diges-tive balance. By embracing Ayurvedic principles, individuals can improve Agni, avoid seasonal digestive dis-turbances, and foster long-term gastrointestinal health. The integration of Ayurvedic knowledge with modern research holds potential for achieving holistic digestive well-being.
