In the broadest sense, there should be no difference in the way a physiotherapist treats a sprained ankle in an elderly patient, an active younger person, or an elite athlete—within reason the pathology and stages of healing remain the same. However proficient the physiotherapist, the process of inflammation and the stages of healing in an acute injury cannot be rushed.
