Chapter 3 examines the musical quality and figurations that shape the theme of revisitation and memory in Wordsworth’s lyric poems. Considering the abiding dynamics of thought in Wordsworth’s poetic process of memory, this chapter first reads ‘Ode. Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood’ to present the odal form as a medium for contradiction and multiplicity, then examines the ways Wordsworth positions ‘Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey’ within the paradigm of the ode to perform a harmonious tension between his tragic consciousness and personal optimism about the condition of life and humanity.
