James Glen: “The Situation, Strength, and Connections of the Several Nations of Neighboring Indians”
View through CrossRef
This document was written by the royal governor of South Carolina, James Glen, in 1761. It emphasized the interaction between Native peoples and the European powers of Britain, France, and Spain in North America, particularly in the province of South Carolina. Glen, in his letter, described the many Native American tribes that called this region home at this time and their interactions with Europeans. Specifically, Glen mentioned the nations of the Catawbaw (Catawba), the Cherokee, the Creek, the Chickesaw (Chickasaw), the Chactaw (Choctaw), and the Yamasee. Glen also gave rough estimates to the number of “fighting men” and their location in connection to the city of Charles-Town (Charleston).
