Az elmúlt évtizedek során a 24 órás ambuláns vérnyomás-monitorozás alkalmazása fontos része lett a hypertonia diagnosztikájának és a terápiás döntések irányításának. Míg korábban a klinikumban elsősorban a fehérköpeny-hypertoniások meghatározására használták az ambuláns vérnyomás-monitorozást, egyre több bizonyíték áll rendelkezésre arról is, hogy a rendelői vérnyomásnál pontosabban jelzi előre a célszervkárosodások fellépésének kockázatát. Az automata készülékkel történő ambuláns vérnyomásmérés számos egyéb esetben is igazolta hasznosságát, például terápiarezisztens hypertoniában, borderline hypertoniában vagy terhességi hypertoniában. A hypertoniakutatás és -kezelés várható jövendő iránya a vérnyomás cirkadián ciklusának pontos feltárása, a kezelés okozta vérnyomás-variabilitás leírása, valamint a mindennapi életvitel okozta vérnyomásváltozás mértékének megismerése.
