Abstract
Marcus Porcius Cato, or Cato the Elder, was a prominent statesman, orator, and writer from Rome's mid‐republican period. The designation “Elder” is used to distinguish him from his great‐grandson of the same name, Cato the Younger. The Elder Cato is also known as the “Censor” (
Censorius
) and the “Wise” (
Sapiens
). His career began during the Second Punic War (218–201
bce
) and ended with his death in 149 at the outset of the Third Punic War (149–146), a war he famously encouraged with the refrain commonly translated as “Carthage must be destroyed” (Aur. Vict.
