Silver fingerring with turquoise
View through Europeana Collections
Silver ring inlaid with turquoise, used by Bektashi Sufis. The point (Arabic: nuqta) in the middle has a symbolic, mystical meaning. The nuqtawiyya movement is a branch of hurufism, a Sufi doctrine in which letters were assigned a mystical meaning.‖ The dot is below the Arabic letter ba (ب), the first letter of the basmala, the formula "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Erbarmer" (bismillah ar-rahman ar-rahiem) with which each chapter of the Koran begins. Without the dot there would be no text (Quran), so the dot is essential. This view was held by the Bektashi's in Crete, among others. The Bektashi's also saw the dot as a symbol for imam Ali, who was seen as the connoisseur of the secret of the Koran (Birge 1937: 58-62, 148-158).
