The Solovetsky Islands are a subpolar Klondike for botanists

View through CrossRef
The results of field botanical research on the Solovetsky Islands during seven field seasons are reflected. A list of the main biotopes where vascular plants are found is provided. The total list of flora has been increased by 9 species. New locations have been identified for 3 species listed in the Red Data Book of the Arkhangelsk Region. A brief history of the development of the Solovetsky Islands for the purpose of creating plant nurseries, including the botanical garden in the village of Gorka, is presented. The article provides a rationale for why the form of a specially protected natural area in the Solovetsky Archipelago is more appropriate for a national park than for a complex nature reserve, as this form will contribute to the tourism and recreational development of the region while also protecting its unique natural complexes.
