The term “syncretism” in autonomous linguistics refers to how a single morphological form, such as a case‐marker, can serve dual syntactic functions. Among socially oriented linguists, “syncretism” refers to the new versions, or syntheses, that arise when speakers try to understand, ameliorate, or reify the historical moment of the meeting of languages.
