Unbreakable Bodies

Abstract
Studies of the Maji Maji Rebellion often focus on the figure of Kinjeketile Ngwale and the concept of
maji
[water] as an ideology of unity for mobilising Africans to fight against German colonialism. This article shows how Ebrahim Hussein’s
Kinjeketile
recasts maji as more than a symbol of unity, presenting it as a technological shield and an embodied signifier through which resistance, political identity, and a new body politic are enacted. By treating the body as both a medium and mode of signification, the analysis moves beyond conventional historiography to rearticulate the “unbreakable body” and explore its broader significance for Tanzania. Ultimately, the article demonstrates how the embodied legacy of the Maji Maji Rebellion has come to shape Tanzania’s postcolonial political imagination despite the rebellion’s initial failure to liberate Africans from colonial rule.
