Fabrication & evaluation of anti-inflammatory effect of clary sage oil (Salvia sclarea L.) loaded hydrogel films

Objectives: To evaluate the anti inflammtory potential of piroxicam and clary sage oil loaded gellan gum based hydrogel films. Method: Using a 0.5% w/v calcium chloride crosslinker, gellan gum-based hydrogel films encapsulating various dosages of clary sage oil were created via the solvent casting technique. The mechanical strength of hydrogel films was improved by using glycerol as a plasticizing agent, while the solubility of cary sage oil was increased by using Tween 80. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory impact, physicochemical, antioxidant, and animal studies were conducted. Results: The prepared hydrogel films possessed a high mechanical strength and were transparent. Up to 96% of the piroxicam was released over a 24-hour period in films that were crosslinked and loaded with oil. The manufactured oil loaded demonstrated good chemical stability, according to the results of FTIR and SEM, respectively. An in vitro investigation using albino rats revealed that, within 24 hours of treatment, the animals treated with piroxicam and clary sage oil showed maximum anti-inflammatory effects.
