"In the hair, the men attach a dust-like ornament of the feathers of the native neck bird (Plotus rufus). These main ornaments are all of the same type but of varying sizes. The figure shown in Fig. 39 is 28.9 cm. high. The springs are fastened by means of fiber yarn around a wooden stick pointed at the lower end. I have only seen some of the snake neck bird's feathers used as a head ornament. These capercaillies are black with a brownish or whitish stripe running along the top of the coil. All feathers on the same rocker are tied, so that this stripe is either turned outwards, when the rocker gets a motley appearance, or inwards, when it appears completely black. The rocker is held at the head with the help of a bast string or simply inserted into the tangled hair." (pp. 156 - 159, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
