Pierre JAHAN: The Surrealist Herbarium, 1945-1948
View through Artsy
The Surrealist Herbarium is perhaps the most surprising series by Pierre Jahan in the photogram technique, with which he experiments starting from the mid-40s. Unlike Man Ray, Jahan returned to the scientific origins of the photogram: copies of grasses and other plants superimposed on his own photographs. Unexpectedly, it was fire in his studio in 1948 that completed the works - if the fire was an accident, Jahan liked the final effect of the burnt edges, and exhibited them as such.
