Practical Implementation of Precision Livestock Farming Concept in Cattle, Pig and Poultry Breeding

View through CrossRef
Due to inefficiencies in animal husbandry and the stress in manual handling of animals in the farm, this paper evaluated practical implementation of precision livestock farming concept in cattle, pig, and poultry breeding. All the references used in this study were selected from local and international articles that majored in precision livestock farming, and a total of 28 references were used for this study. This report outlines precision livestock farming in the global setting. Based on the findings from this study, the precision livestock technologies being used in cattle farming were ruminant collars and reticulum rumen boluses and that in pig farming were real-time sound analysis, and poultry farming had automatic body weight estimation. The benefits of precision livestock farming were efficient use of resources, reduction of harmful emissions per unit of product, and reduction of drug use through early detection of pathology. In addition, the findings from this study showed that majority of the farmers were skeptical toward adopting precision livestock farming due to the absence of information transfer, support systems, and a reliable service provider for farmers. The opportunities available for farmers toward adoption of precision livestock farming were efficient use of resources in the farmland, increase in the production capacity, and reduction in the mortality rate of animals, hence leading to increased profitability and yield of farmers, ease of sorting animals for treatment or medications, and improved feeding and water intake of animals in the farm.
