Space of Exception
View through CrossRef
The concept of space of exception is often used to refer to extraterritorial enclavic spaces where the juridical order is suspended, and where arbitrary power is exercised and justified as exceptional political interventions either temporarily or permanently. Discussions of spaces of exception in geography and the social sciences in general have emerged in the context of the US‐led “war on terror” after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, with concentration or detention camps as the prime examples. The parallel concept,
state of exception
, and its connection to the contemporary workings of sovereign power, has been influential in the shaping of these debates. Geographies of exception have further focused on the normalization of the spatialities of exception, the global geopolitics of exception, as well as the production of bare life in spaces of exception as fundamental to biopolitical regimes.
