Culturemes in Education

The report substantiates the need to develop students' skills in identifying and decoding culturemes in foreign-language texts. Culturemes are defined as linguacultural units whose content is imbued with culturally significant meanings. Deciphering culturememes is essential for successful communication in a foreign language and requires updating cultural background knowledge. Given the dynamic nature of culturemes, their acquisition within a curriculum is a complex task. Using examples from English-language and Russian-language media discourse, namely The Economist and the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, the importance of identifying and explaining culturemes in foreign language teaching is demonstrated. Such work methods as discussion and commentary (linguacultural commentary) are proposed. Learning assignments aimed at developing the skill of identifying and understanding culturemes require expanding students' knowledge of the culture of the target language, promoting students' cognitive independence and increasing their motivation for learning. The success of training directly depends on the teacher, the scope of their linguistic and cultural professional knowledge and life experience.
