The Dandy Lion an exotic lately discover'd in a Stable Yard

View through Europeana Collections
The distinguished gentleman - Lord Petersham - apparently belonged to the group of the Dandy Lions. As third Earl of Harringston he was captain of the Light Dragoon Regiment of the Prince of Wales since 1799, held the office of \"Lord of the Bedchamber\" under kings George III and George IV, and was regarded as typical Regency buck. Cruikshank presents him on this sheet in fashionably overdrawn silhouette mocking his elegant appearance: While his neck is bandaged by the high-tied tie and his arms appear spindly, the high-set, pleated stirrup pants allow an extreme amount of freedom of movement. The natural proportions of the person are distorted into the grotesque by raising the waist and overemphasizing the chest. The inserted speech bubbles caricature the affected manner of speaking of the dandies. The dandy asks the stable boy: \"Jack, do the ladies ogle, eh, ha, ha,\" (Jack, do the ladies ogle), he replies: \"Oh yes-, they stare very much, at both you, and the Horse\" (Oh yes, they stare very much, at both you and your horse).
