View through CrossRef
Abstract Josip Broz, later to adopt the name Tito after his release from prison in 1933, was the leader of the Yugoslav Partisans during World War II and of communist Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) from 1945 to his death in 1980. Tito's success in leading a resistance movement against Axis and collaborationist (quisling) forces in Yugoslavia earned him a loyal following and a reputation as one of the most successful guerilla‐turned‐conventional commanders of the twentieth century. In the 1960s he became a founding member and leader of the non‐aligned movement. He died as president of Yugoslavia in 1980.
