Rome, 33. Piazza del Colosseo
View through Europeana Collections
The view of the Colosseum from a northern direction is shown. The Arch of Constantine is visible to the right. On the right edge of the picture, the Wall appears to the garden of Santa Maria Nova (also: Santa Francesca Romana). In the background the palatine is indicated, with the church of San Bonaventura. In the context of the representation of architecture, it is interesting to note that it was not until the middle of the 18th century that the demolition of the Colosseum was stopped. In 1744 Pope Benedict of the XIV issued an edict to preserve the Colosseum.
