View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Johann Friedrich Tiede. The German writer is shown here as a chest in a profile to the left. He wears a wig with braid, the clothes are simple. The effigy was framed around, and a sign with its shortened name appears below. At the top, the effigy is held with a loop on a hook. Johann Friedrich Tiede studied theology at the University of Halle from 1752. He wrote religious songs. His poetic talent earned him a membership of the “Society of Friends of the Beautiful Sciences” in Halle. After his studies he served as secretary to the Royal Prussian General Johann von Mayr, whom he met in Halle, and after his death he became a field preacher at the Anhalt-Bernburg regiment. From 1774 he worked until his death as the first pastor and school inspector in Schweidnitz. Some of his songs were included in the singing book of the garrison church in Halle. The paper was cut by the German miniaturist Christian Gottlieb Geyser (1742-1803). The template comes from Johann Friedrich Bause, who is working in Leipzig (1738-1814). The paper was used as a frontispiece for a publication by Tiede in 1781. The Händel-Haus Foundation also has a secondary engraving: BS-III 436. Signature: Bause del. Geyser sc. Caption: IOH. FR.
