The Songs of the Nile: from Abbay to the GERD
View through CrossRef
Abstract
The river Abbay, known internationally as the Blue Nile, holds profound cultural, emotional, and political significance in Ethiopia, serving as a symbol of identity, unity, and life. This paper explores the role of popular songs in reshaping public perceptions of Abbay and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Historically, Ethiopian songs and myths have portrayed Abbay as a lost and abandoned river, unable to alleviate the nation’s chronic water insecurity and poverty. However, the construction of the GERD, initiated in 2011, catalyzed a shift in these narratives. This study analyzes three key songs, tracing the transformation of Abbay from a symbol of betrayal to a source of national pride and hope. These songs reflect the emotions and aspirations of Ethiopians regarding the GERD, highlighting themes of renaissance, self-reliance, and regional cooperation. By examining the evolving portrayal of Abbay in music, the paper illustrates how popular culture can influence public sentiment towards large water infrastructures, emphasizing the symbolic power of dams as both engineering feats and emotional catalysts. The study calls for a deeper understanding of the cultural and symbolic dimensions of water governance to foster sustainable and inclusive management of shared water resources.
