Tuschlavering on paper.
The painting depicts the demon Kala Rawu’s (or Kala Rahus) head and the moon goddess Ratih, whom he tries to eat up.
According to legend, Kala Rawu tried to drink the sacred elixie toya amreta or amerta, which bestows eternal life, but is reserved only for the gods. Wisnu saw Kala Rawu drink from the elixure and heap of his head. Kala Rawu had been able to take a clunk in his mouth, but had not swallowed it down; his body died but his head continued to live. He swallows the sun and the moon and creates eclipses.
When an eclipse occurs, the Balinese go out of their houses and for as much indignation as they can to intimidate Kala Rawu’s head and free the sun or moon.
