Fragment of Cuneiform Envelope

View through Harvard Museums
Corner fragment of a clay envelope originally meant to enclose a tablet. Raised impressions of some signs from the tablet are visible on the interior side of the fragment. Seal impression on exterior showing two figures approaching seated divine figure. This seal impression in the Old Assyrian style also appears on the left edge of object 2000.196, another fragment of a clay envelope. While it is possible that both these objects were sealed by the same person, it is hard to be certain. In the Old Assyrian period, seals would be used and re-used by many generations, or even by those who did not own the seal. It has proved difficult to ascribe ownership of many of the seals to persons known from the texts. IMAGE: Middle row, first on left.
