View through Europeana Collections
This thangka is formed by two scenes that are particular to the paintings of the Geluk Order, which, from the 16th century and guided by Dalai Lamas, occupied a central space in the government of Tibet. The left-hand part shows the paths of Buddhism, with Sakyamuni Buddha in the middle and, on his chest, an image of Vajradhara in the form of yab-yum, a symbol of the highest level of understanding. He is surrounded by masters, bodhisattvas, deities and sages, some of whom are wearing the yellow hat of the Geluk Order founded by Tsongkhapa (1357-1419). In the right-hand part, the central figure is Tsongkhapa, and above him, there are deities and masters flanked by the paradises of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future and the Buddha Amitabha.
