Janet Beveridge, born Jessie Philip, married the economist William Beveridge two weeks after his famous report heralding Britain’s welfare state was published in 1942. Her contribution to that report is insufficiently acknowledged, as also is her role in the ‘second foundation’ of the London School of Economics in the 1920s and 30s. As Secretary of LSE Janet was an important fund of ideas and initiatives, and she played a key role in securing the grants that enabled LSE to develop its international reputation.
