Correlation of Absolute Eosinophil Count with Tissue Eosinophil Density in Nasal Polyps

View through CrossRef
Abstract Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (NPs) is often associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Nasal polyposis is known to recur after surgical removal. Intranasal or systemic steroids are effective in preventing recurrence in many cases. While monoclonal antibodies have been extensively used to manage other eosinophilic diseases, their efficacy in managing NPs is still under trial. This study was conducted to correlate absolute eosinophil count (AEC) with tissue eosinophil density (TED) in NPs of patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Methodology: Subjects diagnosed with NPs were included in this study after written informed consent. The AEC was obtained along with other routine preoperative blood investigations. Following FESS, TED was determined from histopathology specimens. Data were also gathered regarding the usage of intranasal steroid spray before surgery. The AEC and TED were correlated. Results: The study demonstrated a statistically significant association between AEC and TED (P = 0.001). There was also a statistically significant association between the TED group and nasal spray usage (P = 0.036). Those who used the intranasal steroid spray had lower TED than those who did not. Conclusion: In this study, we found a correlation between the AEC and TED of NPs. We also found a significant association between the use of intranasal steroid spray and TED.
Title: Correlation of Absolute Eosinophil Count with Tissue Eosinophil Density in Nasal Polyps
Description:
Results: The study demonstrated a statistically significant association between AEC and TED (P = 0.

There was also a statistically significant association between the TED group and nasal spray usage (P = 0.
036).
Those who used the intranasal steroid spray had lower TED than those who did not.
Conclusion: In this study, we found a correlation between the AEC and TED of NPs.
We also found a significant association between the use of intranasal steroid spray and TED.
