Unilateral Habitual Anterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocation in an Adolescent Female: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocations are infrequent, constituting merely 3% of all shoulder dislocations, and anterior dislocations outnumber posterior dislocations. Chronic instability is a usual feature observed in both spontaneous and traumatic anterior dislocations, although the manifestation of incapacitating symptoms remains relatively uncommon. This case report presents a unique instance of habitual unilateral sternoclavicular joint dislocation in an adolescent female. A 26-year-old female nurse who noticed abnormal movement of her right collarbone's medial end during shoulder motion. Over two years, this issue progressed, occurring during daily activities. She could self-reduce the prominence, and there was no associated pain, trauma history, or co-morbidities. Examination revealed habitual right sternoclavicular joint dislocation, manageable by manual pressure. This case underscores an uncommon presentation of unilateral sternoclavicular joint dislocation in an adolescent female, prompting considerations for evaluation and management. Sternoclavicular joint dislocations are rare occurrences that pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. A collaborative and comprehensive approach, involving a multidisciplinary team, is essential for effective evaluation and management of these injuries.
