“De trots van de wereld”: De literaire tuin van Joannes Geometres

The present article contains a Dutch translation of John Geometres’ second and third progymnasmata. Within the collection of six progymnasmata of Geometres, the two here translated form a pair, both in form and subject matter. Both texts are presented in the form of a letter to an anonymous addressee, and both contain ecphraseis, rhetorical descriptions of Geometres’ garden estate. This article provides the first translation of both texts into a modern language other than contemporary Greek. The translation is accompanied by concise commentary in the form of notes to assist in the understanding and appreciation of the text.
