De Orthopedagogiek als Proceswetenschap

View through CrossRef
Abstract Orthopedagogy focuses on problematic situations in upbringing, development, and education. Such problems are considered to be multifactorial and transactional in nature, which calls for a systems-oriented approach that places processes and their underlying dynamics at the center. The theory of complex dynamic systems provides a robust framework for this purpose. From this perspective, developmental, learning, behavioral, and educational problems are not viewed as the result of a single cause, but as outcomes of continuous interactions between the individual and their context. These interactions give rise to person-specific, self-reinforcing patterns that unfold over time and therefore require a process-oriented analysis. Variability in individual behavior offers valuable insights into general principles of change and stability. In this article, we illustrate – drawing on two lines of research, one on developmental and learning problems and the other on tipping points in psychological problems – how a complexity framework can be applied within orthopedagogy. We also discuss several methodological and practical implications of this approach.

Title: De Orthopedagogiek als Proceswetenschap
