Interlude

The interlude maps out how hijras are placed within the male/female binary. It offers a critical examination of the way hijras have been defined—as the third gender, neither man nor woman, and transgender. There are alternative ways of thinking about hijras in terms of other schemas—such as asceticism, eroticism—that lead us away from contradictions arising from identities based on gender and sexuality. Being a hijra points to a broader ethical posture with resultant impacts on the performance of gender and sexuality. Also addressed here is the way in which hijras frame their sex work and show that it contributes to the formation of their asceticism.
