Hijras are often translated as “transgenders” in the English media and the legal discourse of India. Referring to hijras as transgenders and not trans women encapsulates complexities that haunt queer studies and anthropology. Hijras are too often and too easily relegated to positions of marginality as if their lives can be fully contained within the imperatives of survival—with survival being narrowly defined in terms of not dying of AIDS.
