Abbé Alexandre-Louis Benoît de Carondelet

This chapter details Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Abbé Alexandre-Louis Benoît de Carondelet on January 6, 1764. Carondelet wrote to Rousseau that he had renounced all of his possessions because of his belief in natural equality. He planned to live the rustic life of a virtuous gentleman. In his letter, Rousseau begins by expressing his congratulations for Carondelet's decision. He then addresses Carondelet's doubts, saying that “there is not one of us who does not diverge from the truth a hundred times a day in relations with men regarding things that are clear, important, and often prejudicial.” Rousseau also talks about hypocrisy and the practice of virtues.
