Yoga and Cultural Identity in Jammu & Kashmir: A Critical Analytical Examination of Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari’s Contributions

This study critically examines the contributions of Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari to yoga and cultural identity in Jammu & Kashmir. Brahmachari, a prominent yoga guru and spiritual leader, played a significant role in shaping the narrative of yoga as a tool for national identity and cultural revival in post-independence India. Drawing on historical context, philosophical analysis, and socio-political critique, this research investigates how Brahmachari's yogic teachings and institutional activities influenced the construction and expression of cultural identity in the contested region of Jammu & Kashmir. The study highlights Brahmachari's efforts to institutionalize yoga education, promote cultural reassertion through Sanskritization, and project yoga onto global platforms as a symbol of Indian spiritual heritage. While acknowledging his contributions to the popularization and standardization of yoga, the analysis also critically engages with controversies surrounding his political affiliations, spiritual authenticity, and the homogenizing effects of his pedagogical approach. The study concludes by emphasizing the complex intersections of spiritual practice, regional politics, and cultural identity, positioning Brahmachari's legacy as a prism through which to understand yoga's evolving role in India's cultural narrative. Future research directions are suggested, including comparative analyses, ethnographic studies, and investigations into media representations and minority community perspectives.
