Commonly Encountered Paranasal Sinus Anomalies

View through CrossRef
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of commonly encountered anatomical variations and anomalies of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Emphasis is placed on the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses, as well as variations of the nasal septum and turbinates. Developmental patterns, prevalence rates, radiological characteristics, and clinical relevance of these variations are discussed in detail. Particular attention is given to anatomical variants that may alter sinus drainage pathways, predispose individuals to chronic rhinosinusitis, or increase the risk of complications during endoscopic and surgical procedures. The chapter also highlights the importance of preoperative imaging—especially computed tomography and cone-beam computed tomography—in identifying variations such as accessory maxillary ostium, sinus septations, ethmoid cell variants, sphenoid sinus pneumatization patterns, optic nerve and internal carotid artery protrusions, concha bullosa, and nasal septal deviation. Understanding these anatomical differences is essential for accurate diagnosis, effective surgical planning, and the prevention of intraoperative complications.
