Porträt Gaspare Spontini (1774-1851)

Portrait of Gaspare Spontini. The Italian composer is presented here as a man, about middle age, in profile to the right. His hair is short, but twisted, he wears a sacko with a high collar, including a thick neck binder. The portrait is oval. Gaspare Spontini studied at the Conservatorio della Pietà de Turchini in Naples from 1793 to 1795 and made himself known as an opera composer in Italy before he went to Paris in 1803. There he became a comrade composer of Empress Joséphine. In 1820 he followed a call by King Friedrich Wilhelm III to travel to Berlin and became director of music and the 1st Kapellmeister at the Royal Opera House. He remained the latter until 1841. His best-known opera is “La vestale” from 1807. The sheet contains no evidence of a steer or a template. No other collection has a specimen of the present stem, which represents a lithography with chalk. The Händel-haus Foundation has another portrait of Spontinis: BS-III 662. Label: G. SPONTINI.
