Postherpetic Neuralgia

Abstract This is a brief abstract of postherpetic neuralgia. Post-herpetic neuralgia can be a troubling diagnosis, but it is also known as a classic example of a neuropathic pain condition and is well studied. It provides a clear example of how a peripheral nerve change can lead to dysfunction of the central nervous system. Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication of shingles, which is characterized by its classical dermatomal rash. The pain is a classical neuropathic, burning pain The etiology of postherpetic neuralgia and common treatments are discussed; also, demographic and prevalence information is given about postherpetic neuralgia. Some investigational uses of therapies for postherpetic neuralgia are mentioned (these investigational uses need additional studies).
