Zeitzer Rathaus with Finkgräfebrunnen
View through Europeana Collections
The Zeitz town hall with a well that no longer exists today. The Finkgraben Fountain, a foundation of the merchant Hermann Finkgraben, was unveiled at the inauguration of the new and reconstruction of the town hall on 7 October 1909. Archangel Michael, patron saint of the town of Zeitz, and four allegorical women’s figures adorned this well. During the 2nd World War, it was dismantled and the bronze parts melted down for war purposes.
Despite the short time of its existence, the Finkgraben well had become a landmark of the city.
The woodcut is undated and signed to the right under pressure.
