Circus Maximus

View through Europeana Collections
Illustration of Circus Maximus from the book "History of Costumes of Peoples Throughout the Centuries" by Paolo Lorenzini, Nerbini Publishing House, Florence, 1934. It was located between the Palatine and the Aventine hills and measured 370 by 40 meters. On one side, it was semicircular, while on the other, it was almost straight, where the entrances were located. At the ends, towers stood, belonging to prominent senatorial families. The charioteers had to complete seven laps around the circus. In the central axis of the circus, there was a barrier on which statues of gods, small altars, a column supporting the statue of Victory, a replica of a temple, and an obelisk dedicated to the Moon were placed. The seating for the common people was separated from that of the senators and knights.
