Simon de Montfort and His Support

Abstract This chapter begins with the established and current treatment of Simon de Montfort, centring on the idea of enigma, and moves to a reassessment. Central to this is the concept of charisma, which is explored in some depth, and that of iconic masculinity. The chapter then turns to the support accorded Montfort, beginning with the clergy, monastic and lay. It deals with clerical complaints against the crown, as well as the role of Montfortian bishops. Support within the towns is then highlighted, including the role of London politics. The eclectic nature of the support for Montfort is stressed. He is identified as a populist leader, exploiting national feeling and xenophobia, and as a master of propaganda. The chapter concludes with the Battle of Evesham and Montfort’s martyrdom.
