View through Europeana Collections
Unpublished sound recordings collected between 1931 and 1932 by André Schaeffner (French anthropologist and ethnomusicologist) during the Dakar-Djibouti mission lead by Marcel Griaule (French ethnologist). The Dakar-Djibouti mission which lasted from May 1931 to February 1933 is the first major French ethnological mission which allowed the collection of extensive ethnographic and linguistic documentation in 15 African countries: from Senegal to Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (Sudan and South Sudan today), from the wolof, malinké, dogon populations (Sanga region). The recordings offered in consultation are mainly songs (solo and choir) accompanied by instruments but also instrumental pieces and stories.
