City and Countryside: The Mesopotamian View

Abstract
To an ancient Mesopotamian, city life was civilized life. The city was the seat of culture, and non-urban life was uncultured. The Mesopotamian visualized his or her city as being located at the centre of a world that could not exist without it, both in mundane and cosmic terms. The centrality of the city in the Mesopotamians’ own concept of their culture was a constant theme throughout their literature.
