Este libro sobre "Tectónica Activa" forma parte de la serie de "Estudios en Geofisica" publicados por el Foro de Investigación en Geofísica de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de los Estados Unidos de America. Uno de los propósitos de la serie es el tratar temas de geofisica relacionados con problemas sociales, a fin de evaluar el estado de los conocimientos y revisar las necesidades, prioridades, debilidades, etcetera, de los programas de investigacion. Dentro de la serie, los ultimos dos tftulos han sido: "Volcanismo Explosivo: Inicio, Evoluci6n y Riesgos" (1984) y "Contaminacion de Aguas Subterrfmeas" (1984 ). El presente titulo de Tectonica Activa, preparado por un grupo de especialistas en diversas disciplinas, trata sabre las caracteristicas espacio-temporales de procesos tectonicos, articularmente sabre aquellos que es posible esperar que ocurran en un futuro proximo y cuyo estudio presente beneficios potenciales en la reduccion de riesgos para nuestra sociedad.
