Arturo Carlo Jemolo was one of the most prominent jurists and historians of church-state relations of the 20th century. He was also an eminent participant in the Italian intellectual and cultural life, speaking from a peculiar position: Catholic, liberal and progressive thinker, he expressed his position on various issues from the pages of newspapers such as La Stampa and cultural periodicals such as Il Mondo and Il Ponte. During the Fifties, in particular, he was at the centre of an inflamed debate about the nature and solidity of political secularism and religious freedom in Italy. His thought is still extremely modern and useful to understand some aspects of the Italian debate about secularism and of Italian society itself.
