Autobiographical Poetry

Jean Bodel wrote the extended poem titled Farewell around 1202, as he withdrew from society due to a debilitating illness, believed to be leprosy. This personal poem, unique and the first of its kind, provides insights into social systems, patronage, and healthcare in medieval Arras. The poem vividly portrays Bodel's physical decay and suffering, with leprosy viewed as divine punishment. Despite his torment, Bodel's mind remained intact, allowing him to create this piece. The poem reveals that lepers were considered social outcasts, eligible to solicit donations for their care at leprosariums. The poem also alludes to patronage, naming Bodel’s patrons including Raoul Ravuin, the mayor, and his guild. Finally, the poem serves as testament to Bodel's will to join the Crusade, which was thwarted by his illness. This goodbye genre, introduced by Bodel's Farewell, served as a record and recompense for deeds done to the poet, a practice later emulated by other poets. An English translation of this poem is provided.
