This chapter focuses on the pastourelles of Jean Bodel, a type of Old French lyric poetry that often involves sexual themes depicted in natural settings. Pastourelles typically present encounters between shepherdesses and knights and were first developed in Provençal before Jean Bodel began writing them in French. While many pastourelles end with non-consensual sex, some variations exist, including those from the perspective of the shepherdess or those that do not include sexual assault or rape. Bodel's pastourelles are notable for their implicit challenges to feudal authority, particularly when a female character questions the authority of the knight over her. Old French and English versions of the poems are presented to allow the reader to experience Bodel's poetic language.
