The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the theoretical approaches and the practical realizations connected with the public intervention in the Italian economy of the early 20th century through the study of personalities such as Giovanni Montemartini, Francesco Saverio Nitti and Alberto Beneduce. They are among the greatest theorists and direct protagonists of the economic intervention in Italy in the last century and contributed to confer to it a cultural dignity.
